Joining the UGANET list

UGANET is a grassroots organization of network administrators, technical professionals, and interested individuals at the University of Georgia. UGANET meets once a month to provide a forum for the discussion technical and networking issues. The list is really only of interest to such individuals.

The UGANET list is a private one, and its members have stipulated that joining the list can only occur if

  1. you can demonstrate that you are responsible for networked infrastructure at UGA or
  2. you are sponsored by an existing UGANET member.

If you qualify, then you need to let the list owner know of your desire to join and show that you meet one of the criteria above.

  1. If you satisfy criteria (1), then you don't need a sponsor. Send uganet-request@listserv.uga.edu a SHORT note indicating the networking infrastructure (hubs, wiring, servers, etc.) for which you are responsible. (Something like "I am the new network person for the College of Creative Recordkeeping, replacing A. Wylde Guess- please add me to UGANET" would be fine.) You can send it with the subscription request in the magic format (listed below) if you want to make it really easy on us.

  2. If you are being sponsored, the simplest method is for your sponsor (someone already on UGANET) to send an email to uganet-request@listserv.uga.edu saying something like this:
    ======
    We have a new person,
    jblow@arches.uga.edu Joe Blow

    please subscribe him/her to UGANET. Thanks!
    ======

    The easiest method for the list owner is for you send a message to uganet-request@listserv.uga.edu that is already pre-formatted to subscribe the person, and all the owner need do is blindly forward it to listserv. Use this "magic format" to prove how cool you are:

    ======
    Hey UGANET owner, I am really cool and thoroughly approve that this person
    be added to UGANET.  Thanks!

    // JOB PW=XXXXXXXX
    ADD UGANET jblow@ARCHES.UGA.EDU Joe Blow
    // EOJ
    ======

    Even though you may know who the current list owners are, sending to uganet-request@listserv.uga.edu will send to the current list owner and keeps you from having to know who that is. What do you care anyway! :-)

    Also acceptable is for the new person to just try to subscribe to UGANET by emailing to listserv@listserv.uga.edu with "subscribe uganet" as the message text. This will cause a subscription request to be sent to the owner(s). If we don't know the person then we will hassle him/her to make sure he/she is either a network-type person or has a current UGANET member as a sponsor. To prevent the hassling step, the sponsoring UGANET person should send an email to uganet-request@listserv.uga.edu shortly before or after the new person tries to subscribe so we know who it is.
